The future of UK airport capacity in the South-East

This seminar will focus on the proposed expansion of UK airport capacity in the South-East, and the implications for policy priorities. The seminar is timed to provide an opportunity to consider the Government’s proposals in the revised draft Airports National Policy Statement (NPS) to develop a third runway at Heathrow, ahead of the House of Commons vote - expected in the first half of 2018. Delegates will discuss options for further airport expansion in the region, and the key issues for planning, air quality and community engagement. They will also consider how the UK can develop its aviation industry in line with both - the targets set out in the Clean Growth Strategy and the economic demands for increased airport capacity. Further sessions will look at the steps that can be taken to ensure that local transport systems and other aspects of connectivity and infrastructure are well placed to meet the additional passenger demand. The conference takes place as the Transport Select Committee reports on the NPS, calling for additional policy measures to ensure the protection of passenger interests, and to address the environmental, social and health impacts on affected communities. We also expect discussion on the Government’s new aviation strategy, with another consultation planned later this year on its main aims - relating to safety, competition and customer service, balancing growth with environmental concerns, and the UK’s international positioning.

Maritime CIO Forum, Singapore

Digitalisation is re-shaping the business world and is increasingly important for gaining competitive edge. Emerging technologies, together with the evolution and development of new platforms, are providing unparalleled opportunities within shipping and the related transport and supply chain infrastructure. If Industry 4.0 is to be truly realised, then shipping must embrace a new approach to the traditional supply chain. Moving a container from A to B involves, on average, 30 different actors and 200+ interactions - delivery of goods has never been more transparent, nor more complex. So, what can digitalisation do to streamline and integrate shipping with the connected supply chain ecosystem? Across three key sessions we will discuss how we can identify the real digital opportunity in front of us and re-define digitalisation in maritime and transport.

Next steps for low emission vehicles - innovation, investment and delivery

This seminar will be a timely opportunity to discuss key issues for the development of low emission transport in the UK. Delegates will discuss the potential impact of the planned Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill - which seeks to improve the availability of electric charge points and insurance for driverless cars - as well as looking at commitments set out in the Clean Growth Strategy to further develop transport infrastructure and take advantage of emerging technologies. Planned sessions discuss the challenges for promoting innovation in hybrid and battery technology, the opportunities for vehicle-to-grid technologies following the announcement of £30 million funding for the schemes, priorities for attracting investment in new types of electric vehicles, and the further action that might be taken to lower emission levels in line with the targets laid out in the Paris Agreement. Attendees will also consider the way ahead for developing the electric vehicles market and infrastructure, in light of the BEIS Select Committee inquiry, and the prospects for the increased electrification of private and public transport.

Vessel Performance Optimisation

Higher fuel prices, tighter regulation, and a commitment to a greener future are changing the way the shipping industry does business. Greater insight into vessel performance is available through high-tech monitoring systems and digital twins, but it is vital to understand why a parameter is being monitored and what the data shows in order to adjust a vessel’s operation to make it more efficient and attractive to charterers. The 2020 sulphur-in-fuel oil cap brings new challenges. Largely, the availability of fuel and the consequences to shipowners and operators if obtaining compliant fuel is not possible. With more fuel blends available to meet the 0.5 per cent limit, no two ports will supply the exact same composition of fuel. Even a slight change in quality between fuels can lead to substantial issues with engine performance and breakdown, as the recent problem in the US Gulf illustrates. The industry needs clarity on which fuels will be available and where they will be to make decisions now for 2020. Ships may choose to retrofit scrubbers or covert to LNG to avoid the problem of low sulphur fuel availability. They require larger CAPEX investments, but OPEX may be lower as low sulphur fuel costs are expected to rise. Shipowners and operators must weigh up the options and understand which investments make financial sense and what financial assistance they may be able to obtain. VPO Singapore 2018 will consist of three key sessions to identify and discuss the approaches to better ship performance through monitoring, fuel management, and financing technologies for change.
