[23/07/2013] Portsmouth's planning authorities have given the green light for the development of an 18-storey building which will house a new 'UrbanVilla' hotel.
The £20 million project, which is taking place at the grandly-addressed Number One Portsmouth, will be based on designs from 5plus Architects.
David King-Smith, head of 5plus Architects' London studio, has been quoted as saying: "The brief was to design an appropriate tall building that would enhance and define the location in a positive way and embody an exciting new hotel brand and concept that will potentially roll out across the UK."
Construction work is set to start this year and the new hotel could be open for business in 2015.
Portsmouth is, of course, one of the UK's leading maritime centres - both in terms of commerce and academia - and a major new hotel in the town will be a boon for conference planners and delegates.
