Champions' League for Liverpool?
24 July 2013
[24/07/2013] Liverpool hopes that the development of a new exhibition centre and hotel will propel the city into 'the big league for large meetings and events'.
Liverpool's planning authorities have given the go-ahead for the £40 million Exhibition Centre Liverpool and £26 million Pullman hotel at Kings Dock, which will be linked by a bridge to the existing ACC Liverpool convention centre and arena.
Sources report that the expo centre and 200-room hotel should be ready for the Spring 2015 season.
Liverpool's Mayor, Joe Anderson, was an enthusiastic support of the development: “This is fantastic news for Liverpool. It will drive our transformation into one of Europe’s leading destinations for large-scale conferences, exhibitions and events."
Bob Prattey, chief executive of ACC Liverpool, commented: "This project is further proof that the city means business when it comes to competing with European destinations in hosting major conferences and exhibitions."
The exhibition centre will include an atrium, meeting rooms, a business centre and three halls, each of 2,700sqm.
Liverpool is, of course, one of the UK's most important ports. The green light for the Kings Dock project comes hot on the heels of the news that Portsmouth - one of the key maritime centres in the south - has granted planning permission for a major new 'UrbanVilla' hotel development.
