Thumbs down for Earls Court
04 July 2013
London's Mayor Boris Johnson approves the plan to demolish the Earls Court Exhibition Centre, as part of a major redevelopment scheme.
The new development plan envisages the creation of a 77-acre site that will include four "villages" and a "high street". The developers claim it will create 7,500 homes and thousands of permanent jobs.
However, leading figures in the exhibition industry, and opposition politicians, are strongly against the move, arguing that it does fully taking into account the exhibition centre's vital role in promoting UK trade.
Green Party London Assembly Member Darren Johnson (no relation - though the Johnson clan are well represented in UK politics) said: "Boris Johnson claims to be a champion of the London economy and making it more attractive to foreign investment.
"Yet he has backed the demolition of the exhibition centres that are estimated to be worth over a billion pounds to London's real economy, that attract one a half million visitors."
As we reported yesterday, the Association of Event Organisers (AEO) were among the throng who urged the Mayor to halt the development plan.
